    This black box did …
This black box did not record at all. It was invented by Les Paul and was called the “Les Paulverizer”. It was a remote control that enabled Les to control previously recorded tracks. It was part of his act for many years, “merely shtick”. If you listen you can hear that the playback tempo was faster than what he played live. But don’t take my word for it do a search for it. Les was a musical genius and an electronics wizard. RIP Les.

    I recall when I was …
I recall when I was a wee lad when Les and Mary played on the Television. I bought a Gibson L6-S with the same finish the the old Les Paul TV models had. On the old black and white sets the grain on the guitars just jumped off the screen. I still recall when I was 2yrs old like it was yesterday and a few memories before that too.

i saw this vid on …
i saw this vid on PBS way back when i was a little kid. i thought it was so amazing then.

i believe that the little black box is nothing more than 4 record-level knobs (one per track) that control an external multi-track unit set up in a loop.

You’re absolutely right! I’ve always said that the guitar that bears his name is NOTHING like the guitar that he actually plays!

It’s funny.. les himself doesnt even play a “les paul”. His guitar is a Les Paul PROFESSIONAL which is a bigger guitar with a lot of switches.
