E-Bow Guitar Lesson On Gibson Les Paul Electric Guitar

Ebow Lessons Below: An improvised guitar performance using the E-Bow Plus with a Gibson Les Paul electric guitar, and featuring many video filters. I figured it was a little boring with one camera angle so I went off experimenting with the filters in Final Cut Pro. Check out my music: http://www.humboldtmusic.com/chadjohnson Here’s an mp3 of the cassette thet comes with the EBow Plus featuring Lenny Walker, a very skilled ebow user: http://precisionintermedia.com/chadsVX2100pics/EBow_PlayersGuide.mp3 Nerdly Tech Info: This is a live performance done in one take. I used a VX2100 camera with modified audio (Greg Winter Mod), and a Sound Devices MixPre mixer. There was a Century Optics .65 wide-angle lens on the camera. Recorded with 2 mics, a Sennheiser e906, and an AT4033a recorded hard left & right and later mixed to mono (for youtube encoding). Guitar is a Gibson Les Paul Studio Lite with Bartolini PBF 49, & 51 pickups. Amp: Mesa Lone Star Special set to clean channel. Boss DD-6 digital delay set to “Hold”. E-bow Plus was used with the neck pickup. The video was captured in Final Cut Pro, and color correction was used to find a nice general color. Then I started desaturating to go to black & white then back to color. I also cut the video clips in time to parts of the performance and added as many filters as I could, making their flow more organic using keyframes set to rhythms in the performance. I hope you like it! It took 9 minutes to write and perform this, and about 4 evenings to edit the video. Feel free to ask me any questions.

    Thanks!
I use Final Cut Studio 2, a professional editing suite. It’s around $1,200.00 and is for Mac only.
I can’t paste URLs in the message box, but if you google “Final Cut Studio 2″ you will find it.

If you want a full featured video app for PC I suggest Sony Vegas. It’s really sweet, and if you search “Sony Vegas B&H” you can find it as a “CD only” for 129.95! Normally it’s around 469.00.

    Hi Nicola!
I really love my Mesa LSS amp! It sounds really great. I’d say it has a more vox sound due to the EL83 tubes, the Lone Star classic uses 6L6 tubes, and has a more open sound. There is a small problem with some of the rectifier tubes from Mesa - the blow out, but will be replaced free, but if you get a NOS tube it will do just fine. That only effects the 5, & 15 watt settings. Check the “Boogie Board” on the Mesa site for discussion. I highly recommend this amp! It’s loud enough too.

    I think E-Bow Plus …
I think E-Bow Plus is newer, but right now they took a break from making them (I think) and you have to get them on ebay. Google around. The “plus” is cooler because you have 2 settings, and one is for high notes and/or playing low notes with cool high harmonics.

    My last message disappeared????
Hey Thank you very much for the kind complement. It helps that I’ve been playing for 25 yrs. The E-Bow Plus came with a technique cassette that gave some great tips to make it sound like different instruments. Its a lot of left hand sort of hammer-ons while you pop the ebow straight down on the string for a cello. Also I made myself record ebow string sections on some of my songs to help me practice. Search “Chad Johnson music” to find my music - Life gets in the

    It just vibrates …
It just vibrates the string, and gets louder the closer you get it to the pickup. The rest is all hammer-ons with your left hand.

    It works that way …
It works that way as well. It just sounds like electric distorted guitar. I prefer to go clean because it really drives the notes hard the clloser you get to the pickup. As it is I use my neck pickup, volume at 1 or 2, tone at 2 or 3. But yeah, any sound you would use on electric guitar works with eboow. Humbuckers sound better too…
