Gibson Les Paul Standard vs. PRS Custom 24 - comparison /good sound/

By: admin
Published: October 23rd, 2011

Paul Reed Smith Custom 24 versus Gibson Les Paul Standard
-Cabinet: Custom built 4×12 Cab with Celestion Vintage 30 speakers.

-2 mics: Shure SM 57 + Shure Beta 58. The main is the sm57 (90%), and the beta gives only a touch of “headroom” to the sound (10%). Sm57 on axis at the side of the speaker cone. The Beta58 right next to it and off axis. I know it’s an unconvetional way to use the beta 58 (being a vocal mic) but it gives a little extra to the dry sound of the sm 57. And it makes the sound definately more natural, takes away of the tipical sm 57 character.

-Lexicon Omega Studio desktop recording studio (does a pretty great job)

-Macbook pro: Garageband for sound; iMovie for the rest. No effects, EQ, mastering.

Intro and outro song: Lynyrd Skynyrd - Still Unbroken

Enjoy it!

1962 Gibson Les Paul SG Standard 01131

By: admin
Published: October 20th, 2011

http://www.frettedamericana.com/gibson_les_paul_sg_standard_1962-d-1131-0.html
This forty-eight year old, 13-inch-wide Les Paul SG Standard weighs just 7.20 lbs. and has a nice, fat nut width of just over 1 11/16 inches and a standard Gibson scale length of 24 3/4 inches. Solid Honduras mahogany body with beveled edges, one-piece mahogany neck with a typical ‘62 medium thin profile, and rosewood fretboard with 22 jumbo frets. Two original Gibson PAF humbucking pickups with outputs of 7.56k and 7.70k. Four controls plus three-way selector switch, all on lower treble bout. ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic non-retainer bridge with metal saddles and Gibson “Sideways” Vibrola tailpiece. All hardware nickel-plated. The rich cherry finish on this guitar is totally unfaded and there is some very typical light finish checking. There are a few very small and insignificant marks/indentations on the back and the edges. There is just one very small mark/indentation on the top - just by the jack input. Otherwise this “last of the Les Pauls” is in as near mint (9.25) condition as one could wish for. Complete with the original “Tune-O-Matic Bridge” instruction sheet. Housed in its original Gibson four-latch “Faultless” black hardshell case with orange plush lining (9.25).

Epiphone Les Paul Tribute Plus in Black Cherry Demo @ Nevada Music UK

By: admin
Published: September 10th, 2011

Buy this here… http://www.nevadamusic.co.uk/guitar/electric/epiphone-les-paul-tribute-plus-electric-guitar—black-cherry-including-hard-case
Epiphone’s premium Les Paul Tributes have offered the professional guitarist all the performance they need whether it’s on the road or in the studio. Now, Epiphone turns it up a notch by adding a gorgeous AAA Flame Maple top and new translucent colours…introducing the Les Paul Tribute Plus!

This Les Paul Tribute features a solid Mahogany back with a solid, carved hard Maple cap with Flame Maple veneer to create the ultimate combination of warmth and bite. Everyone knows that set-neck guitars provide the best rock tone and sustain and the Tribute Plus takes that to the next level featuring the original “deep set” neck joint. The solid Mahogany neck with hand-fitted, glued-in joint extends well into the neck pickup cavity creating maximum neck-to-body contact and acting almost like one continuous piece of wood. Combined with the Mahogany/Maple body, the result is a tribute to Les’ timeless guitar design with the sound that you can only get from a Les Paul.

The Les Paul Tribute Plus features the “1960’s” SlimTaper neck with a comfortable “D” shape that was introduced and made famous on many 1960’s era, Kalamazoo-made guitars from Gibson and Epiphone. This profile is thick enough to provide the stability and tone you want but thin enough to provide you with the comfort and speed you need. Capturing all the power and nuances of the Tribute Plus is a pair of authentic Gibson USA ‘57 Classic humbucking pickups. With its “Patent Applied For” decal on the base plate, the ‘57 Classic and ‘57 Classic Plus are faithful replicas of the famous Gibson humbuckers that helped define the music of the late 1950s. The ‘57 Classic gives you a tone that is warm and subtle with full, even response that doesn’t hold back when you need that classic Gibson humbucker crunch! The ‘57 Classic Plus is the perfect bridge pickup and mimics humbuckers of that era that received a few extra turns of wire. This treatment gives the pickup slighter higher output without sacrificing its rich, vintage tone. In combination, this pair of humbuckers overdrives tube preamps to a smooth level of saturation without becoming overpowering. Both ’57’s feature Gibson’s special Alnico II magnet, vintage enamel coated wire, nickel plated pole pieces, nickel slugs, maple spacers and vintage-style, braided wiring.

But this guitar is not just about recreating the “old”, it’s also about looking ahead… just as Les himself continued to do throughout his lifetime. Using 4-conductor pickup wiring, Epiphone has added two push/pull tone pots to allow for series/parallel pickup switching. The result is a Les Paul with huge pallette of tonal possibilities - from full-on, in your face humbuckers to quacky singlecoil-like sounds and everything in-between. Other upgrades include a U.S. Switchcraft(tm) 3-way toggle, Mallory-150 tone capacitors, Epiphone StrapLocks, 16:1 ratio premium Grover(tm) locking tuners and a premium hard case. This guitar is not only a tribute to Les Paul; it’s a tribute to just how good a guitar can be.

1959 Les Paul Standard - ORIGINAL

By: admin
Published: August 31st, 2011

EDIT: Note I am now under the impression this may be some sort of a conversion…the top colour and figuring don’t seem quite right.

This is a quick no-frills video of a 100% original 1959 Les Paul standard played directly into an old Marshall amp on low volume, recorded with an iPhone 4.

Please note also that’s a metal Billy Gibbons type Peso pic was being used.

I was lucky enough to get a chance to try this outstanding guitar when I was looking to buy an 1959 LP Junior… also got the chance to try a lovely 53 goldtop.

The burst had an incredible tone… very dry and woody sounding… bright, yet full.

Thought some of you might be interested, so I posted it!

Thanks again to the lucky owner forgive me the wonderful opportunity to play it - sorry my playing doesn’t really do it justice… I was a little overawed to say the least!
