Is this a good guitar selection?

Filed under:  vintage les paul  by:  admin

I am a beginner guitarist and I am looking at getting at getting an Epiphone Les Paul (vintage sunburst) as my first electric guitar. Is this a good choice? Y or y not?

Epiphones are good guitars but it depends on the series you are looking at, They have several different qualities. I would suggest you check out the Agile guitars at http://rondomusic.com

They are a better quality and less expensive.

What are some Classic guitars (electric) like the Gibson Les Paul, that would be great for jazz, blues, and rock? But still has a vintage/stylish look?

i want the ones with the best tone and feel
i play rock and metal no jazz or country
I don’t refuse to play jazz or country, I just started playing a week ago and right now i’m just learning simple riffs and songs. Rock and metal are just my prefered genre to play right now. I just wanted the strings that matched the best with what genre I play the most of.

Simply put…… get Ernie Balls .009 for better string-bending or .010 for a slightly fatter sound.
After setting up Gibson Guitars for 20 years for Gibson, the best reponse on a Les Paul are Ernie Ball strings for a good response especially since you have a preference for rock and metal.

is the Epiphone Les Paul Special 2 good for playing mainly muse songs?

Filed under:  vintage les paul  by:  admin

I like MUSE a lot and am going to start learning guitar soon, and i figured this would be a good starter guitar! do you think this guitar is good and if you’ve had any experience with it can you please say what you think.

thank you

i have been playing guitar for a few years now, and the Epiphone SG Special was my first guitar. ( they are exactly the same thing, same wood same pickups, different shape).

for a starting guitar it is definitely one i would recommend, its cheap, dependable, and it lasts (i still practice on it at home today). Its certainly not a perfect guitar, understandable with its cheap price tag, (by the way if you were to go into guitar center and buy the same package, you can easily get it cheaper then that website), you will have to get the action (how high the string is over the frets) adjusted initially, because it will buzz all over the low E string, they make these guitars over-seas, where the air is different, so the wood moves by the time it gets here. but if you buy it from a store a technician will gladly adjust it for you, its an easy fix. The tone isn’t perfect, but certainly the best ive found for that price.

This is about as good as you can get for a beginners guitar, i played on mine for 2 years before buying a better one. I don’t see any regrets in it.

Good luck!

Which Guitar?? SG or Les Paul (best answer = 10 pts.)?

Filed under:  vintage les paul  by:  admin

recently i saw the Epiphone Vintage G-400 in Worn Brown on musicians friend’s website… i was totally blown away by the finish on the guitar, just the shiny woodgrain made the guitar look awesome. But lately on some sites even youtube i’ve seen the color to be more dull or less shiny and darker. i’d go check it out in person but the shops in my area don’t carry epiphone anymore…. if anyone owns or has personly seen this guitar please let me know how it looks. Also if the color on this guitar isn’t what i’m looking for my second choice is a les paul 100 any input. i mostly play rock, blues, a little metal so the upper frets are needed to be very clean. any other guitars in the 200-350 price range that i should consider?

thanks~

I have a worn cherry….The finish was incredible…and extremely shiny…I have seen some of the worn browns, but they weren’t mine and they seemed a little more worn, the finish was still there but lacked that really bright shiny appearance. Both played the same…I like the SG for getting to those bottom frets, and because of it’s lighter weight, it was easier to play all night than my Dean. On the Les Paul 100, those bottom frets are set a little, not much, but a little more into the body, than the SG…still easily reachable. I prefer the natural tone on the Les Paul over the SG. And I think the Les Paul Sunburst looks awesome. I would go to your guitar shop, and try them out. To me, everyone has their idea of the ‘right’ guitar. For some it is appearance, or fret placement, some people look for a certain sound or tone. And most important I think is it’s overall ‘feel’.

So between to two of those I would lean towards the LP 100

Age of a Gibson Les Paul without the serial number?

Filed under:  vintage les paul  by:  admin

I’ve had my Gibson Les Paul Deluxe for about 10 years. I received it as a gift from a close family friend, and the implication was that she received it in leiu of payment from someone else.

The thing is most definitely "hot"; the serial number has been scratched off deeply from behind the headstock. (It’s also been hot for at least 15 years, so I’m less concerned about that.)

What I’m trying to figure out is how to properly determine the age of the guitar. I’m reasonably sure it’s late 1970s, but I don’t think I can get any more detail without a serial number.

Is there any other way to get more info on the guitar’s origin? Do LPs have a serial number anyplace other than the back of the headstock? Can I determine the age based on the setup / style of the pick-ups?

I’ve been playing guitar for a while, but am not part of the "vintage" scene, and know fairly little about nice guitars. (I’m cheap.) Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Here’s a picture of something a lot LIKE the guitar:

http://gitar.hatarozo.hu/mods/block_art/images/4501915951_les-paul-classic_410_01.jpg

Though this is a LP Classic.

(Now that I don’t have the guitar in front of me, I’m questioning whether it’s a Deluxe or Classic, but pretty sure it’s a Deluxe… I’ll verify later.)
I checked. It is an American Made Les Paul Deluxe. I photographed and blew up the scratched out serial, but can’t make out any real detail…
BUT, no mini humbuckers. I think it had some customizations done.

if you could get a picture of your guitar i might be able to help you

if not, the les paul deluxe was only around for a short period of time from about 69 to the mid 80s

also there were more colours available during the 70s, what colour is it?

also i just remembered the dexules used mini pickups which look like this

http://www.guitarpartscanada.com/images/minihumbuckers1_r01_c6.jpg

on the back of the headstock it should also have a stamp saying "made in USA" if it was after 1975 i think

the necks in the 70s was made from maple and in the 80s it was mahogany

p.s. jason is wrong, you can get a gibson les pauul studio which is the base model for about $1200 or you could get an epiphone les paul, which are basically gibsons budget range
